Kitchen Renovation

Do you get inspired by all the reno programs on TV and is it time to finally tackle your own kitchen renovation project? If so, then this article is for you. A kitchen renovation is more than just picking the right backsplash or countertop and can be quite tricky without the right preparation. That’s why we’ve put down a few pointers and a checklist for you on what to be mindful of when doing a kitchen renovation.

Gas appliances

Before you even start designing this beautiful new kitchen it is important to decide what type of appliances you want to install. Having your stove on one side of the kitchen or the other will establish where the gas lines need to be installed or whether an extra gas-point in the house is needed. This and other gas related works require the services of a licensed gasfitter from Prime Plumbing & Gasfitting.

Kitchen plumbing

Most kitchen renovation projects include moving around plumbing and or gas, for example the sink or the stove. Or maybe it has been your lifelong dream of having a kitchen island.

Which is great, but keep in mind to consider the placement and functionality of the island before you start renovating. If the island is going to contain the sink or the stove, or maybe even both, this will have implications for your plumbing and gas. Including a dishwasher will most likely also mean changes to your water supply. In other words, make sure you consult with your Prime Plumbing & Gasfitting before you start your kitchen renovation to prevent any nasty surprises.

Tapware

Some of the older homes still have lever taps in the kitchen, either wall mounted or sink mounted. If you have a wall mounted lever tap, meaning a tap with a separate hot and cold water tap you might want to replace those with a mixer tap. Most kitchens nowadays have mixer taps, but the choice is all yours. Our expert plumbers at Prime Plumbing & Gasfitting can install any tap you pick.

Checklist

To ensure that your kitchen renovation doesn’t turn into the renovation from hell, ensure the works are performed in the following order:

1. Make a list! – Before starting any renovation project it is important to make a list of questions to ask yourself. Include questions like: what is the budget? How long will the kitchen not be accessible for? What arrangements will we have to make regarding cooking?

2. Prep demolition – Decide beforehand what is going and what will be reused. Have a separate area set up for the items you want to keep/reuse.

3. Design – Choosing where to put your plumbing, gas, stove, dishwasher etc. is the most important thing. Changing the colour of your paint is an easy fix, changing your plumbing isn’t. Great questions to go over are: do we want a dishwasher installed and where? Do we need (plumbing) connections for built-in gas appliances? Are we going to install a water filter or a food waste disposer?

4. Renovation – Make sure all your plumbing and gas is done by a licenced plumber and gasfitter from Prime Plumbing & Gasfitting.

If you have any special requirements or requests, ensure to discuss these with the applicable contractor in the design phase. Our friendly staff at Prime Plumbing & Gasfitting ensure all your plumbing and gas needs are taken care of.
