A gas cooktop install is licensed gas work in Victoria — Type A endorsement, ESV-certified, Compliance Certificate at the end. Prime Plumbing & Gasfitting installs Smeg, Westinghouse, Bosch, Miele, Fisher & Paykel, Bellini and ILVE cooktops across Melbourne's south-east, on customer-supplied units or supplied-and-installed by us.

A gas cooktop is a consumer gas appliance with an open flame inside your kitchen. The Compliance Certificate isn't ceremony — it's the trail your insurer asks for after a gas-related event, and what ESV asks for if a complaint is escalated. DIY gas installs are illegal in Victoria and void homeowner insurance for the consequences of an unlicensed install.

Cooktop cutouts vary by manufacturer — even between models from the same brand. We check the cutout dimensions against the unit's spec sheet BEFORE the cooktop is unpacked, so a wrong-size cutout gets fixed by the cabinetmaker before the install attempt rather than during. Saves a return trip and avoids damage to the unit.
The gas connection uses a flexible appliance connector (or rigid pipework where appliance position is fixed), terminating at a manufacturer-approved isolation cock. Pressure test on completion, soap-solution leak check at every joint, and electronic gas detector verification on the appliance regulator. ESV-certified work, Compliance Certificate issued.
You bought the cooktop already — fine, we install it. We can also supply the cooktop with your install if that's simpler. Either way the install spec, leak-test process and Compliance Certificate are identical. Pricing is itemised so you know which line is which.

We check the cooktop cutout, the gas isolation point location, the existing gas line size (some 6-burner units need a larger feed than the existing line), and any cabinetmaker dependencies. Quote is sent after — fixed price, written.
Existing gas cooktop or induction unit comes out first. Gas is isolated, the unit disconnected from the regulator, lifted out of the cabinetry. Removed unit is disposed of (or left for the customer if you want to keep it for parts).
The new cooktop is positioned in the cabinet cutout, the gas connection made (flexible appliance connector or rigid pipework as required), and the unit secured to manufacturer specs. Any gap-sealing required by the manufacturer's instructions is done.
Gas is reinstated, every joint soap-tested, electronic detector run over the regulator and connector. Each burner is fired in turn, ignition checked, flame quality verified. Any anomaly is fixed before we leave.
ESV gas Compliance Certificate is issued and emailed as a PDF. Manufacturer warranty card is registered in your name (most modern brands require activation by the installer). The unit's serial number is recorded on the certificate so the trail is complete.
Making sure your kitchen is prepared and ready for a gas cooktop installation saves everyone time. We've put together an in depth guide that details all the steps you can take for a seamless install: Gas Cooktop Installation Guide: Preparing Your Kitchen
Below are 4 points that we look for:
We help you select the right size and configuration for your space and cooking style.
We confirm whether your bench requires modification before installation begins.
Most gas cooktops need a power outlet for ignition. We check access and setup before installation.
Clear access to the workspace and gas meter allows us to complete your installation smoothly.
A standard 4-burner cooktop install on an existing compliant gas point typically runs $400-$600 + GST. 5- and 6-burner units, or jobs needing a larger gas feed line, run higher. We quote a fixed price after seeing the existing gas point and cutout — send a photo through the form. *Pricing depends on lots of factors — every job is different. Budget for the higher side of the range; we'll quote the actual price on site.
No — it's illegal in Victoria. Any gas appliance install requires a Type A gasfitter under Energy Safe Victoria. DIY gas work is uninsured, voids homeowner cover for consequences, and is reportable if discovered at sale or by an inspector.
Yes. We're happy to install a cooktop you've already bought. The install spec is identical whether you supplied the unit or we did. Pricing is just for the install labour and any parts (regulator, connector, isolation cock if needed).
We check the cutout against the cooktop spec sheet before unpacking the unit. If the cutout is wrong, the cabinetmaker needs to come back — we don't force a unit into an oversized or undersized hole. Catching it before install saves the cooktop from damage and saves you a return trip charge.
A like-for-like swap (same gas point, same cutout size) is typically 2-3 hours including leak test. New runs of gas line, isolation cock replacement, or cabinetry adjustment add time — we tell you which it is at quote stage.
Most 4-burner cooktops work fine on standard residential gas supply. 6-burner units, wok burners and some commercial-style cooktops have higher gas demand and sometimes need a larger feed line. We check the spec against your existing line during the site visit.
Sometimes — older isolation cocks (pre-1980s especially) can be non-compliant or seized. If so we replace it as part of the install, costs a small additional amount that's itemised on the quote. Modern isolation cocks usually stay.
Induction cooktops aren't gas — they're electrical, and a different licence (electrician). We're happy to remove a gas cooktop and cap the gas point if you're switching to induction; the electrician handles the electrical install.
