Toilet Replacement in St Kilda, Wall-Hung Cistern Failure to Floor-Mount Unit

Toilet Replacement in St Kilda, Wall-Hung Cistern Failure to Floor-Mount Unit, Prime Plumbing & Gasfitting Melbourne

Toilet Replacement in St Kilda, Wall-Hung Cistern Failure to Floor-Mount Unit, a Prime Plumbing & Gasfitting plain-English guide to toilet replacement st kilda for Melbourne homeowners. Below we cover what works, what doesn't, and when to call a licensed plumber.

Quick answer: This toilet replacement St Kilda case study covers a callout where the in-wall cistern of an older wall-hung toilet had failed (continuous fill, cracked internal frame). Owner wanted to switch to a floor-mount unit anyway. Half-day job: removed the failed wall-hung unit, capped the in-wall water supply at standard height, installed new floor-mount unit, re-routed waste connection to standard floor outlet.

What we found at the St Kilda property

A 1990s St Kilda apartment with a wall-hung toilet, sleek look but the in-wall cistern frame had developed a structural issue (water visible behind the wall, continuous fill, cracked plastic internal frame). The owner had two options: source a replacement in-wall cistern (expensive, hard to find for the original model, requires wall opening) or switch to a standard floor-mount unit.

They chose floor-mount, simpler maintenance, cheaper unit, easier to service in future.

Toilet replacement St Kilda decisions often come down to this, older wall-hung installs reach end-of-life and the owners choose a more serviceable floor-mount instead of replacing the in-wall cistern.

How a toilet replacement St Kilda job actually goes

1. Water isolated + old toilet removed

Water supply isolated at the in-wall stop tap (still working). Old wall-hung pan unbolted from the wall bracket. Cistern access panel removed, in-wall cistern disconnected from supply and waste. Old waste pan collar inspected.

2. Re-cap supply + waste at standard floor-mount positions

Wall-hung toilets and floor-mount toilets connect differently:

  • Wall-hung: supply enters from behind the pan, waste exits horizontally into the wall cavity
  • Floor-mount: supply enters from the wall low and to one side, waste exits vertically through the floor

For this conversion, we:

  • Capped the high-position in-wall supply
  • Ran new copper from the in-wall supply to a new low-position outlet (the floor-mount needs supply at ~200mm above the floor)
  • Modified the waste connection, old wall-cavity horizontal outlet sealed, existing floor pan collar serviced or replaced

3. New floor-mount unit installed

The owner had bought a mid-range close-coupled floor-mount unit. Standard fitting:

  • Pan placed on the existing floor pan collar (or new collar fitted if old was compromised)
  • Cistern mounted on top of the pan (close-coupled = cistern sits directly on the pan)
  • Supply line connected, flexible braided hose from the new wall outlet to the cistern inlet
  • Sealant around the pan base

4. Test + tune

  • Fill the cistern, check for leaks
  • Run a few flushes to confirm flow rate is correct (not too slow, not running on)
  • Tune the float valve and fill rate
  • Confirm waste flow is correct

5. Wall finish + tile patching

The old wall-cavity access panel was tiled-over with new tiles to match the rest of the bathroom. We coordinated this with the customer (sometimes a separate tiler's job, sometimes within plumber scope).

6. Certificate of Compliance

Issued same day.

Total time on site: about 4-5 hours including the tile patching.

Toilet replacement St Kilda, booking checklist

When to call a licensed plumber for toilet replacement

  • In-wall to floor-mount conversion (or vice versa)
  • Waste pipework modification
  • Supply line modification
  • Certificate of Compliance for property sale evidence

Prime Plumbing & Gasfitting is BPC #103414 licensed. Toilet replacement St Kilda jobs always include a check of the waste line connection, old pan collars are a common source of slow leaks.

Frequently asked questions

No, you can replace with another wall-hung unit if you want. The choice depends on aesthetic preference, budget, and how easy you want future maintenance to be. Floor-mount is significantly cheaper to service.

Like-for-like replacement: 2-3 hours. Style change (wall-hung to floor-mount or vice versa): 4-6 hours due to supply/waste re-routing.

For sudden failure causing water damage to the property, the damage may be covered. The toilet itself is wear-and-tear and not typically covered. Document the original failure and damage with photos.

Technically you can buy and place the unit, but the supply and waste connections are licensed plumbing work, Certificate of Compliance required for insurance/conveyancing purposes.

Close-coupled: cistern sits directly on top of the pan. Concealed (in-wall): cistern hidden in the wall cavity with a flush plate visible. Close-coupled is simpler to maintain, concealed looks sleeker. This case study replaced concealed with close-coupled.

Before You Book

A quick checklist to share with your plumber when you book:

  • When did the issue start?
  • Is it isolated to one fixture or multiple areas?
  • Are there any visible leaks, smells or unusual sounds?
  • Have you turned off the relevant isolation valve?
