Quick answer: Water hammer is a shockwave caused when fast-moving water in your pipes is suddenly stopped, usually by a fast-closing valve like a washing-machine solenoid, a lever-action mixer tap, or an old worn tap washer. The four main causes we see on Melbourne callouts are excessive mains pressure, modern fast-closing valves on older plumbing, loose or unsupported pipework, and worn tap washers. A licensed plumber can usually identify the cause in one visit and fix it with a pressure-limiting valve, a water hammer arrestor, secured pipework, or fresh tap washers, depending on what's actually causing the bang.

What is water hammer?

Water hammer is the shockwave that travels back through your plumbing when fast-moving water is suddenly stopped. When a tap snaps shut or a solenoid valve in an appliance closes, the water inside the pipe has nowhere to go, and all that momentum slams into the closed valve. That's the bang you hear. The pipe shudders, sometimes visibly, and the shockwave travels back through the supply line.

In a quiet bathroom on a Sunday morning, it sounds dramatic. The bang itself isn't dangerous to you, but year after year of small shockwaves stresses joints, fittings and appliance valves more than they were designed for. It's worth understanding what's causing yours and getting it fixed properly.

The four real causes we see on Melbourne callouts

1. Excessive water pressure

If your incoming mains pressure is too high, every valve closure produces a stronger shockwave. Australian Standard AS/NZS 3500.1 sets a maximum static pressure of 500 kPa at any fixture in a residential property, but mains pressure varies across Melbourne and can run well above that, particularly on lower-lying streets closer to the bay.

Real example: on a recent Brighton callout, the homeowner had been hearing a single loud bang every time the dishwasher cycled. Pressure at the meter was 720 kPa, almost 50% above the AS/NZS 3500 limit. A pressure-limiting valve at the meter solved the water hammer, and as a bonus their tap cartridges stopped wearing out so fast.

A pressure-limiting valve (PLV) is a relatively cheap install and usually solves multiple problems at once: water hammer, premature tap-cartridge wear, dripping fixtures, and shorter appliance life. If you've never measured your mains pressure, that's the first thing a plumber will check.

How to tell if pressure is your problem

  • Hammer happens after almost every fixture or appliance use
  • Tap cartridges fail more often than they should (every 2-3 years instead of 5-10)
  • Hot water unit relief valve drips constantly
  • Mixer cartridges weep slightly even when fully closed

2. Modern fast-closing valves on older plumbing

Newer washing machines, dishwashers and lever-action mixer taps close much faster than the old screw-down taps they replaced. Solenoid valves in modern appliances close in milliseconds, much quicker than the 1-2 seconds it takes to close a screw-down tap by hand.

On older Melbourne homes with original copper or galvanised supply lines, that fast closure can produce a much bigger shockwave than the original system was designed for. We see this often after a kitchen or bathroom renovation: the plumbing was fine for thirty years, and now it bangs every time you shut the hot tap on a new lever mixer.

Real example: on a recent Hawthorn callout, the hammer started right after a bathroom renovation that included replacing twin pillar taps with a modern wall-mounted mixer. The supply lines hadn't been upgraded; the new mixer just closed faster than the old plumbing could handle. We fitted a water hammer arrestor at the bathroom branch, and the bang stopped.

Common appliances that trigger this

  • Front-loader washing machines (hammer when filling cycle ends)
  • Dishwashers (hammer at the end of pre-rinse + main cycles)
  • Toilet fill valves (especially modern dual-flush mechanisms)
  • Lever-action mixer taps (hammer when shut quickly)

3. Loose or unsupported pipework

Supply pipes that aren't properly clipped to a joist or strapped against the wall will move when a shockwave passes through. The moving pipe knocks against framing, plaster, or other pipes, and that's often what produces most of the noise you actually hear. The shockwave is the cause, but the pipe banging against something is what makes it loud.

This is why water hammer often sounds different in different parts of the house, it's not always the pipe itself, it's the pipe banging against whatever it's near. A pipe in the wall cavity sounds different from a pipe under the floor sounds different from a pipe in the roof space.

Real example: on a recent Caulfield callout, the homeowner described the hammer as "the whole house shaking". Inspection in the roof cavity showed three runs of unsupported copper between joists. Fitting proper pipe clips reduced the hammer noise by about 80% even before we addressed the underlying pressure issue.

Where unsupported pipework normally hides

  • Roof cavity (especially around hot water unit connections)
  • Under the floor in older homes
  • Behind kitchen cabinets where the supply lines run from the meter
  • Wall cavities behind fixtures fitted during renovations

4. Worn-out tap washers

In older houses, a degraded tap washer can vibrate as the tap closes and produce a "machine-gun" rapid hammering sound, different from the single bang you get from solenoid valves or mixer taps. The washer flutters against the seat instead of sealing cleanly.

Real example: on a recent Malvern callout, the homeowner described "rapid drumming when the kitchen hot tap was nearly closed". Replacing the washer and re-seating the jumper valve fixed it in about 20 minutes. No pressure-limiting valve or arrestor needed.

This is a common misdiagnosis: people assume "machine-gun" hammer needs a major fix, but it's typically a $30 part and a 20-minute visit.

How to tell if it's a washer

  • Hammer is rapid (multiple bangs per second), not a single thud
  • Hammer happens only at one tap, not across the whole house
  • Hammer happens when the tap is almost closed, not when fully shut
  • Older property with screw-down taps still in service

Does water hammer actually damage your plumbing?

Repeated shockwaves over years stress your supply line, fittings, and appliance valves more than steady-flow plumbing should be. The damage is gradual:

  • Joints can loosen: particularly compression fittings and threaded connections
  • Solenoid valves wear faster: your washing machine and dishwasher inlet valves are designed for normal pressure, not repeated shock loads
  • Clipped pipe sections fatigue: copper can develop hairline cracks at fixed points where the pipe is bent
  • Hot water relief valves can start weeping if the pressure system is constantly stressed

None of this happens overnight. But you don't want to ignore water hammer for years either, by the time it causes a visible leak, you've often got more than one stress point on the same property. How a plumber diagnoses water hammer

When we attend a water hammer callout, we generally:

  1. Listen: open and shut different fixtures and identify whether the noise is at the source or further down the supply line.
  2. Check pressure: measure incoming mains pressure with a gauge at the meter and at a fixture. Anything above 500 kPa points at a pressure-limiting valve.
  3. Check pipe support: visible runs in the roof space or under the floor get inspected for loose clips, missing strapping, or unsupported sections.
  4. Look at recent changes: a new appliance install or renovation often points straight at the cause.
  5. Test the offending fixture: fast cycle a washing machine or operate the suspect tap to confirm where the hammer originates.
